installing running water

91% of rural Uganda has no access to piped water, having to fetch and carry water from bore holes, wells, and springs. Working through the Ugandan Ministry of Health, we are equipping health clinics and hospitals with running water, toilets and showers. Providing safe water not only transforms patient care, but also improves staff morale, efficiency and capacity.

This is a significant commitment to radically upscale community health provision.

patient dignity

So far, we have been able to work with 10 Government-funded health centres and hospitals in the Teso Sub-Region of Eastern Uganda.

These facilities are the only option for free healthcare but are frequently poorly funded and inadequately supplied.

We invest in providing water access, reservoir tanks (to maintain a reserve of water when there are issues with the main supply), bathing and washing facilities (including for clothes, plates & cups), and water-borne toilets and/or pit latrines.

investing in handwashing

Regular handwashing with soap is one of the most effective ways of preventing many common diseases – some, such us diarrheal diseases account for 1 in 9 child deaths worldwide. Our program supports the provision of handwashing facilities, including a 1000ltr platform outside school latrines, and education on how regular handwashing can limit the spread of Cholera, COVID, Typhoid and Rotavirus, among others.

This straightforward intervention has already reduced diarrhoeal related school absence by 27% in supported schools.

protecting lives

To date, we have been able to provide 77 out of 91 Government-funded primary schools in Kumi, Uganda, with handwashing platforms. Schools with this equipment have recorded 98% of their pupils routinely washing their hands after visiting the latrine, safeguarding the health and wellbeing of over 40,000 children. Our hope is to extend this not only to the remaining schools, but into other regions as well.

maintaining dignity

Investing in improved access to sanitation is pivotal in addressing period poverty too, as schoolgirls need their hygiene needs met. Each school, when receiving handwashing facilities, commits to a 6-12mth educational and monitoring program that mentors staff in looking after the new equipment and teaching pupils about the importance of good hygiene practice. Teams4U also commits to support menstruating pupils with washable sanitary pads.

drainable pit latrines

With your help we hope to supply schools, and health facilities, with drainable pit latrines and washrooms for women to change, and bathe in privacy whilst on their menstrual periods.

Drainable latrines can be emptied, which means instead of abandoning them when full, they can be in use for 20+ years. An additional benefit is, with correct processing, the drained waste can be turned into fuel.

An investment of £10,000 would equip one school, or health centre, with 2 drainable pit latrines, 2 washrooms, rain-water harvesting, hand-washing platform, and incinerator for safe waste disposal.

external funding

In addition to donor-funding, our staff are dedicated to source investment from foundations and grant institutions to provide as many health centres and schools with these life-changing facilities.

We are only able to seek funding opportunities, such as these, through your support.

We are delighted to have secured funding from both the UK Government’s Small Charities Challenge Fund and the Welsh Government’s Wales and Africa Grant Scheme, to support these projects.
