Visiting the main hospital in Kumi March 2023, a doctor warned Dave and Lois that their maternity ward was getting fuller and fuller each year as the population of Kumi grew. Beds pushed up close to each other with little space or privacy, windowless rooms for mothers and a lack of required equipment is not an uncommon sight. It is noisy and hot.
In summer 2024, a donor kindly stepped forward and offered to fund putting running water in a Kumi health centre. When we spoke to the District Health Officer, we were advised that what was needed even more urgently than a bore hole was a New Maternity ward- the current one had now reached maximum capacity. The new ward would be placed further away from the main hospital and provide beds and space to women receiving treatment. We agreed to fund the building and equipment for this ward, and plans were soon drawn up and foundations laid for this new ward.

One year later, we are thrilled to announce – the building of the New Maternity ward is now finally reaching its completion! As the construction draws to a close, we look forward to when this ward will help the Kumi hospital staff team keep more women safe and healthy during childbirth and give their children a safe and healthy start in life. But before we can open the doors, to make the Maternity ward fully operational, we are raising £12,000 to equip it with essentials — putting up windows and doors, plastering the walls and laying the flooring down.
This final push will transform this new building into a working Maternity Clinic — a place where mothers can deliver safely, and babies can take their first breaths in care and comfort. Over the last couple of years of constructing the Maternity ward, Teams4U has committed to help the mothers of Kumi district give birth safely, and now we are almost there – but only with your support!
If you’d like to be part of this final step, you can help by donating towards the final costs of the construction.
Every contribution, large or small, will make a real difference.
